Hij diende in die hoedanigheid als King's Surveyor. Hij trouwde tweemaal, in 1632 en 1665. Het laatste huwelijk was ongelukkig. Zijn eerste gepubliceerde dichtwerk was de tragedie The Sophy uit 1641.
