Sein Name ging in die australische Geschichte ein, weil er einen schriftlichen Vertrag über die Nutzung von Land mit den Aborigines abschloss; dieser wurde nach ihm Batman’s Treaty benannt. - John Batman (21 January 1801 – 6 May 1839) was an Australian grazier, entrepreneur and explorer. He is best known for his role in the founding of Melbourne. Born and raised in the then-British colony of New South Wales, Batman settled in Van Diemen's Land (modern-day Tasmania) in the 1820s, where he rose to prominence for hunting bushrangers and as a leader of massacres of Aboriginal people in the Black War. During this time he was notorious for committing multiple mass killings of Aboriginal people. (en)
