Hij speelde een belangrijke rol in de ontwikkeling van de luchtvaartkunde, maar bouwde tevens wetenschappelijke instrumenten. Darwin ontwierp bijvoorbeeld samen met de eerste 'string electrometer', een instrument waarmee stroomsterkte gemeten kon worden. Na zijn dood in 1928 werd het lichaam van Horace Darwin begraven op de Ascension Parish Burial Ground in Cambridge. Foi educado em uma escola privada em Woodbridge (Suffolk) e no Trinity College (Cambridge), onde graduou-se BA em 1874. Fundou a em 1885 e foi prefeito de Cambridge entre 1896 e 1897.
