Henk Buck (born Dordrecht, 1930) is an organic chemist. He studied at the University of Leiden where he received his PhD in 1959. He got a lectorship at the University in Theoretical Organic Chemistry in 1964. For his research he received the Golden Medal of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society in 1967. In 1970 he was appointed as professor of Physical Organic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at the University of Technology in Eindhoven. Because there was no Chair for Theoretical Chemistry and Biochemistry he gave lectures in organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, theoretical organic chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology. From 1988-1991 he was Dean of the Chemical Faculty. For his scientific contributions he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences

- Henricus Maria (Henk) Buck (Dordrecht, 7 februari 1930) is een Nederlandse scheikundige, en tot 1991 hoogleraar Organische Scheikunde aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Hij gaf college en deed wetenschappelijk onderzoek op de gebieden van de organische chemie, de technische chemie, de theoretische chemie, de biochemie en de biotechnologie. Op 34-jarige leeftijd werd hij lector in de theoretische organische chemie te Leiden alwaar hij ook promoveerde op reactiviteit en spectroscopie van carbenium ionen en de toepassing van elektronspinresonantie op modelsystemen voor halfgeleiders. Enkele jaren later kreeg hij voor zijn onderzoek de Gouden KNCV medaille. In 1979 werd hij lid van de KNAW. Van Henk Buck werd verwacht dat hij weleens een Nobelprijs zou winnen. De TU Eindhoven had hem voor een van zijn vele onderzoeksgebieden dan ook al eens voorgedragen voor deze prijs. Met meer dan 300 publicaties in vooraanstaande tijdschriften en 43 proefschriften die onder zijn leiding tot stand zijn gekomen werd hij door zijn collega’s als een vooraanstaand geleerde beschouwd. Aan zijn carrière kwam een voortijdig einde, toen hij in samenwerking met Jaap Goudsmit in 1990 in Science een artikel over de ontwikkeling en de werking van een nieuw medicijn (fosfaatgemethyleerd DNA) tegen hiv publiceerde, dat op omstreden onderzoek bleek te zijn gebaseerd. Onderzoek wees uit dat fosfaatgemethyleerd DNA in het door hem geproduceerde materiaal niet kon worden gedetecteerd. Nadat dit door de onderzoeksgroep van Buck werd bevestigd, werd het artikel teruggetrokken. Henk Buck ging als gevolg van de affaire met vervroegd pensioen. In tweede instantie kreeg ook Jaap Goudsmit voor zijn virologisch onderzoek een reprimande. (nl)
