Fumage is a surrealist art technique popularized by Wolfgang Paalen in which impressions are made by the smoke of a candle or kerosene lamp on a piece of paper or canvas. Paalen's first Fumage Dictated by a Candle was presented 1936 in the International Surrealist Exhibition in London. In the same year Paalen painted his first oil based on the fumage, "Pays interdit" ("Forbidden Land"). Several other Surrealists as Roberto Matta, but also Salvador Dalí later utilized the technique, Dali calling the technique "sfumato". The technique has been utilized by artists including Bimal Banerjee, Adam Blakemore, Alberto Burri, Burhan Doğançay, Jiri Georg Dokoupil, Hugh Parker Guiler, Yves Klein, Antonio Muñiz, and Otto Piene.

Le procédé consistait à se servir des traces de suie laissées par de la fumée de bougie ou une lampe à kérosène comme canevas pour une composition visuelle. Paalen laissait ainsi un hasard dirigé pour conduire le support de son travail, parallèlement aux surréalistes qui utilisaient plutôt une méthode de composition automatiste, basée sur l'improvisation inconsciente. La technique du fumage fut utilisée par plusieurs artistes comme Willy Bosschem, Roberto Matta, Alberto Burri, Burhan Doğançay, Yves Klein et Otto Piene. In diesem Sinne hat auch Salvador Dalí Fumage verwendet, nannte sie indes „Sfumato“. In einer entschieden nicht-figürlichen Bildsprache begegnet man Fumage um 1960 wieder in den Arbeiten von Künstlern wie Yves Klein, Burhan Dogancay, Jiří Georg Dokoupil und Otto Piene. (de)
