Fue el primer congreso sionista de la Organización (OS) (que pasaría a ser la Organización Sionista Mundial (OSM) en 1960). Fue organizada y presidida por Theodor Herzl, el fundador del sionismo moderno. Los logros más importantes del congreso fueron las formulaciones de la plataforma sionista, conocidas como el Programa de Basilea, la fundación de la Organización Sionista Mundial, y la adopción del Hatikvah como su himno (primero como himno de Hovevei Zion y, posteriormente convertido en el himno nacional del Estado de Israel). Ce fut le premier congrès de l'Organisation sioniste (qui deviendra l'Organisation sioniste mondiale en 1960). Il fut réuni et présidé par Theodor Herzl, le fondateur du sionisme moderne. - المؤتمر الصهيوني الأول كان المؤتمر الافتتاحي للمنظمة الصهيونية، عقد بزعامة تيودور هرتزل في مدينة بازل بسويسرا يوم 29 أغسطس 1897. بعد أن شعر هرتزل بالإحباط بسبب عدم حماس أغنياء اليهود بالمساعدة في تمويل مشروعه بالعمل على إقامة وطن قومي لليهود ويكون إما في فلسطين، أو الأرجنتين، أو أوغندا. وكان هذا المؤتمر يضم كل الجاليات اليهودية، بهدف العمل على تنفيذ هذا المشروع وقد كان الأساس في إنشاء ما يعرف ببرنامج بازل. - The First Zionist Congress (Hebrew: הקונגרס הציוני הראשון) was the inaugural congress of the Zionist Organization (ZO) held in Basel (Basle), from August 29 to August 31, 1897. 208 delegates and 26 press correspondents attended the event. It was convened and chaired by Theodor Herzl, the founder of the modern Zionism movement. The Congress formulated a Zionist platform, known as the Basel program, and founded the Zionist Organization. It also adopted the Hatikvah as its anthem (already the anthem of Hovevei Zion and later to become the national anthem of the State of Israel). (en)

Foi convocado e presidido por Theodor Herzl, o fundador do movimento sionista moderno. O Congresso formulou uma plataforma sionista, conhecida como programa Basel, e fundou a Organização Sionista. Também adotou o Hatikvah como seu hino (já o hino de Hovevei Zion e mais tarde se tornaria o hino nacional do Estado de Israel ). (pt)
