Malgré son nom mixte, il était bien indigène et non métis, et de famille noble inca : ses noms quechuas totémiques, Guamán Poma (qui seraient transcrits aujourd'hui Waman Puma), signifient « aigle » ou « faucon » pour Guamán, et « puma » pour Poma, et sont associés aux divinités tutélaires du ciel et de la terre ; ils représentaient pour lui le cœur de son identité quechua, bien qu'encadrés par ses noms hispaniques, car, élevé avec les espagnols, il se considérait aussi d'origine latine, à la fois profondément inca et profondément chrétien et donc "indio-latino"... Urodził się w prowincji Lucanas. Posługiwał się językiem keczua, w młodym wieku nauczył się jednak także hiszpańskiego (kastylijskiego). W keczua jego imię brzmiało Waman (orzeł) Poma. Był tłumaczem hiszpańskich duchownych, zwalczających w drugiej połowie XVI wieku ruchy bałwochwalcze wśród Indian. Rok jego urodzenia nie jest pewny. W swoim dziele Primer Nueva coronica y buen gobierno (pisanym mniej więcej między 1600 a 1615 rokiem) raz podaje, że ma osiemdziesiąt lat, a raz, że jest młodszy. (pl)
