De theorie stelt dat een cultuur sterk bepaald is door materiële omstandigheden en hieruit is te verklaren. Cultuur is een aanpassing aan materiële omstandigheden als het milieu, geografie of bestaansbehoeften. Deze facetten garanderen tevens het voortbestaan van een cultuur.
