In molecular biology Caveolins are a family of integral membrane proteins that are the principal components of caveolae membranes and involved in receptor-independent endocytosis. Caveolins may act as scaffolding proteins within caveolar membranes by compartmentalizing and concentrating signaling molecules. Various classes of signaling molecules, including G-protein subunits, receptor and non-receptor tyrosine kinases, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), and small GTPases, bind Cav-1 through its 'caveolin-scaffolding domain'.

  • Las caveolinas son proteínas integrales de la membrana plasmática presentes en estructuras celulares denominadas caveolas. Estas estructuras son invaginaciones de la membrana plasmática de 50 a 100 nanómetros de diámetro, descritas por primera vez en 1953 por George Palade. Las caveolinas se expresan en la mayoría de los tipos celulares de los vertebrados, pero especialmente en células endoteliales (superficies de epitelios), adipocitos (células grasas) y miocitos (células musculares). La caveolina se localiza en las denominadas "balsas lipídicas" de las membranas celulares.

  • Caveoline sind die häufigsten membranständigen Proteine der Caveolae, 50–100 Nanometer großen sackförmigen Einbuchtungen der Plasmamembran auf der Oberfläche von unterschiedlichen Zelltypen. Die Molekülmasse der Caveoline liegt zwischen 22 und 24 kDa. Bislang sind drei Caveoline bekannt, am besten untersucht ist Caveolin-1. Es wird als biochemischer Marker der Caveolae in den unterschiedlichen Zelltypen angesehen. Caveolin-1 bildet einen hochmolekularen Komplex und interagiert mit Caveolin-2. Die höchste Expression von Caveolin-1 findet man in Fibroblasten, Endothelzellen, Pneumozyten Typ I und Fettzellen (Adipozyten). Caveolin-3 wird nur von Muskelzellen gebildet.
