"In the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, the fictional Sindar (meaning Grey People, singular Sinda, although the latter term was not generally used by Tolkien) are Elves of Telerin descent. They are also known as the Grey Elves. Their language is Sindarin. The King of Doriath, Elu Thingol was the King of the Sindar. The Sindar were happy in Middle-earth, but once the desire for the Sea was aroused in them, they could not be content until they sailed to Eldamar. Although less learned and powerful than the Calaquendi and less interested in crafts than the Noldor, they were extremely gifted in music, and their voices were very fair. The Sindar are \"grey\" perhaps because they were not Elves of the Light, never having actually set foot in Valinor, but neither were they Avari, since they did accept the invitation and set out on the journey (and therefore were technically counted among the Eldar). They are sometimes referred to as Elves of the Twilight. The term grey may also refer to Elu Thingol's grey cloak. The term Sindar is actually not Sindarin in origin: it is the Quenya name devised by the Noldorin exiles. It may also be related to Lindar, the Telerin name for themselves. The name that the Sindar used for themselves was simply Edhil (\"Elves\", singular Edhel). When the Teleri left for Aman, they called themselves the Eglath, the Forsaken Ones. The Teleri were the greatest host of the Eldar. They had two kings, the brothers Elw\u00EB Singollo (or Elu Thingol as he was later known in the Sindarin tongue) and Olw\u00EB. "Les Sindar ou Elfes Gris sont un groupe d'Elfes dans l'\u0153uvre de J. R. R. Tolkien. Ils faisaient partie \u00E0 l'origine des Teleri, la troisi\u00E8me et la plus grande des tribus qui entreprit le voyage vers Valinor. Lorsque les Elfes des deux premi\u00E8res tribus atteignirent le Beleriand, ils furent forc\u00E9s de faire halte, ne pouvant pas traverser la Mer. Orom\u00EB abandonna alors les Elfes quelques temps afin de prendre conseil aupr\u00E8s des autres Valar en Valinor. Pendant l'absence du Vala, les Teleri entr\u00E8rent \u00E9galement en Beleriand et s'install\u00E8rent majoritairement en Ossiriand. De retour d'une entrevue avec le roi des Noldor, Finw\u00EB, l'un des deux seigneurs des Teleri durant la Grande Marche (avec son fr\u00E8re Olw\u00EB), Elw\u00EB, se perdit dans les bois de Nan Elmoth envo\u00FBt\u00E9 par Melian la Maia. Son peuple le chercha longtemps, mais en vain. Lorsqu'Ulmo revint pour faire traverser la Mer aux Teleri, certains refus\u00E8rent, car Oss\u00EB, un Maia vassal d'Ulmo, les avait convaincus de rester en Terre du Milieu. Ceux qui \u00E9taient partis \u00E0 la recherche d'Elw\u00EB entendirent l'appel d'Ulmo trop tard, et celui-ci partit sans eux. Ils prirent alors le nom d'Eglath, les Abandonn\u00E9s, tandis que ceux qui \u00E9taient rest\u00E9s \u00E0 la demande d'Oss\u00EB prirent le nom de Falathrim, le Peuple des C\u00F4tes. Leur seigneur \u00E9tait C\u00EDrdan le charpentier. Ils fond\u00E8rent les ports de Brithombar et d'Eglarest. "De Sindar, ook wel Grijze Elfen genoemd, is een volk in de fictieve wereld, Midden-aarde, van J.R.R. Tolkien. Sindar is de Hoog-elfse naam die de Noldor aan de Elfen van Beleriand gaven. De Sindar zijn van oorsprong Teleri. Alle Sindar waren onderdanen van Elu Thingol de heer van Doriath. Veel van de Sindar woonde bij hun koning in Menegroth. Onder de Sindar vielen ook de Falathrim hun heer was C\u00EDrdan maar hij was een vazal van Koning Thingol ook vielen onder de Sindar verschillende Telerijnse groepen die rondtrokken ten westen van de Ered Luin. Het belangrijkste verschil tussen de rest van de Teleri en de Sindar was dat de Sindar een liefde hadden voor het de westelijke landen van Midden-aarde en voor hun koning Thingol die de liefde voor hun verwanten en voor de Valinor overtrof. Zij bleven hierdoor aan de kusten van Midden-aarde achter toen de rest van hun geslacht westwaarts over zee naar Valinor trok. Terwijl de Rest van de Eldar in het westen woonde, woonden de Sindar in Midden-aarde zij hadden rust en waren gelukkig. Drie eeuwen lang waarin Morgoth gevangen zat, leefden zij, rondtrekkend waar zij wilden, in Beleriand. Dit alles veranderde toen Morgoth terug kwam uit Valinor en zijn intrek nam in Angband. Hij zond legers uit om Beleriand te veroveren. De Sindar werden terug gedreven tot in Doriath en de havens van Cirdan, tot de komst van de Noldor die de Orks van Morgoth versloegen en rust brachten. Die rust zou slechts van korte duur zijn. Van korte duur tenminste in jaren van de Elfen gemeten. Voor mensen was het zeer lang. In slecht acht eeuwen werden de Noldor en de Sindar die met hun verbonden waren vernietigd, evenals de landen waarin zij leefden.
