Initial criticism of the album was generally positive, as LL Cool J's lyricism and Rick Rubin's sparse, minimal production for Radio were praised by several music critics. It has since been recognized by critics as LL Cool J's greatest work. Reflecting the ghettoblaster and new school subculture of urban areas in the United States during the mid-1980s, Radio belonged to a pivotal moment in the history of hip hop culture and music. Its success helped contribute to the displacement of old school hip hop with the new school form, and to the mainstream success hip hop would experience during this period. Radio served as one of the first cohesive and commercially successful hip hop albums in the genre's history, and its success also served as a career breakthrough for LL Cool J and the album's producer Rick Rubin.
