Fue descubierta por Pierre M\u00E9chain el 27 de marzo de 1781, y \u00E9l posteriormente comunic\u00F3 su descubrimiento a Charles Messier que verific\u00F3 su posici\u00F3n y la a\u00F1adi\u00F3 a Cat\u00E1logo Messier como una de las \u00FAltimas entradas. Es una de las galaxias m\u00E1s grandes existentes en la vecindad de la V\u00EDa L\u00E1ctea, con un di\u00E1metro de m\u00E1s del doble que ella, y se caracteriza tanto por su riqueza en gas para formar nuevas estrellas c\u00F3mo por su elevado n\u00FAmero de regiones HII (m\u00E1s de 3000, algunas tan grandes y brillantes que tienen n\u00FAmero NGC propio y que han sido estudiadas por el Telescopio Espacial Hubble, mostrando la presencia de super c\u00FAmulos estelares al menos en algunas de ellas) y de c\u00FAmulos estelares j\u00F3venes (tambi\u00E9n estudiados con dicho telescopio), lo que apunta a una elevada tasa de formaci\u00F3n estelar.
