Vrijwel altijd opereren MLM-deelnemers volledig op een freelancebasis, wat inhoudt dat niemand in een arbeidsrechtelijke dienstbetrekking staat tot het moederbedrijf, de fabrikant of leverancier. De deelnemers zijn dus zelfstandige ondernemers en geen werknemers van het bedrijf. De top van de onderneming draagt geen verantwoording voor de lagere niveaus, en die hebben dan ook geen sociale verzekering.
