dbpprop:abstract	"Māori in the United Kingdom are a subgroup of the larger Pacific Islander community in the UK and include New Zealand born Māori immigrants to the United Kingdom as well as their British born descendants. At the start of the millennium, approximately 8,000 Māori resided in England alone (as opposed to the United Kingdom as a whole). Historically Māori have been famed in the UK for their athletic prowess on the rugby field as well as their various artistic skills. Many of these entertainers who came to the UK received highly positive reviews and many decided to stay due to better prospects and opportunities. Mākereti (Maggie) Papakura of Whakarewarewa is one example of an early Māori immigrant who came to the country touring with a troupe of performers; she married in 1912 and lived in the UK for the rest of her life. During World War I significant numbers of Māori troops came to the UK in order to help fight with the British Army (during this time period military service was one of the main reasons why some Māori moved overseas). Many of these were actually housed in Papakura's Oxfordshire mansion. Later on in the 1950s, a small group of Māori residing in the British capital established the London Māori Club. The aim was to promote Māori culture through the performance of traditional songs and war dances. In 1971 the group renamed itself Ngati Ranana Māori Club. To this day the the Ngati Ranana cultural group hosts weekly meetings, language classes and celebrations. By far the most well known aspect of Māori culture in the UK is the traditional dance, haka which has received much promotion through the performance of it by the New Zealand All Blacks rugby union team. In the late 1990s Ngati Ranana member Taone O'Regan described his view on life for a Māori in London: "We've got about 20 to 30 families with six to eight core families. I've always said I'd stay for two years. I've been here 10 – it gets harder to go back. It's difficult if you have a British partner. Suddenly you're a mother of a Cockney kid. Have you heard a Cockney trying to speak Māori? It's all Kia ora, babes. " To this day Māori are still coming to the UK where they are drawn to the stages and concert halls of the capital in particular, although after over a century of Māori residing in the United Kingdom and a current population of over 8,000, the second generation British-born Māori have helped bridge the gap between the very different British and Māori cultures. " Alongside Ngati Ranana, other notable Māori cultural groups in the UK include Manaia, Matariki Maori Cultural Group, Maramara Totara, and Te Kohanga Reo o Ranana, which aims at helping Māori immigrants to the UK inform their children about Māori culture and help them keep their Māori identity and awareness of their heritage."@en ;
