David Gestetner arbeitete anfangs an der Wiener B\u00F6rse und hatte t\u00E4glich die B\u00F6rsenberichte abzuschreiben. Aus dieser T\u00E4tigkeit entwickelte er den ersten Kopierer, bei dem anstatt auf Papier auf eine Wachsschablone geschrieben wurde und diese als Kopiervorlage verwendet wurde. Gestetner ging nach London, wo er im Jahr 1881 ein Unternehmen gr\u00FCndete, das die Schablonen und die Stifte f\u00FCr sein Verfahren herstellte. Durch Weiterentwicklung des Verfahrens war es im Jahr 1890 bereits m\u00F6glich 1200 Kopien pro Stunde herzustellen. Sein Sohn Sigmund Gestetner (1897-1956) \u00FCbernahm nach ihm die Firma.
