Ordained a priest in 1984, he began his career with curacies at All Angels, Sandhurst and St Mary\u2019s Portsea and was then successively a chaplain at St Paul\u2019s Cathedral, London, Rector of St Dunstan's, Stepney and finally, before his ordination to the episcopate, the Archdeacon of Northolt. He is a passionate advocate of overseas church links and has a younger identical twin brother. Chessun's beliefs were cited as the reason for some \"valid but irregular\" ordinations, in a case with similarities to an incident involving his predecessor, Tom Butler. In May 2011, three men who are part of a church-planting group in the Diocese of Southwark were ordained in Kenya. This group had declared that they were in a impaired state of communion with Chessun due to his views on homosexuality and, consequently, were not willing for him to ordain their candidates. The names of the men have not been released as of 21 July 2011. In March 2011 he began public ministry as the 10th Bishop of Southwark. He is a strong advocate for the parish system as the most effective means of church presence and engagement in the life of local communities, including the need to proclaim the Gospel afresh amid the rapid changes in church and community life. Chessun is also the lead Bishop for Urban Life and Faith for the Church of England. This offers him an opportunity to contribute to debates and discussions on the importance of the churches' contribution to urban and public policy within society.
