- Le Centre de commerce mondial de Montréal est un édifice de bureaux et hôtelier situé dans le Quartier international de Montréal. Il a été construit sur la ruelle des Fortifications en 1992, au Vieux-Montréal. Des anciens édifices rénovés y sont couverts et forment ainsi un atrium, contenant des boutiques, restaurants et un accès au Montréal souterrain et à la station Square-Victoria. Complété en 1992 par (en) en consortium avec Provencher_Roy , c'est un exemple de « gratte-ciel horizontal » et un exemple-type de renouveau urbain, d'architecture de préservation et de réhabilitation du patrimoine. Le complexe a réussi à unir plusieurs édifices commerciaux datant de l'époque victorienne (entre autres, l'édifice historique de la Banque de la Nouvelle-Écosse et l'édifice de la Canada Steamship Lines) en les rejoignant à l'aide d'un atrium de verre, qui recouvre l'ancienne ruelle des Fortifications, lieu des anciens murs de défense de la ville coloniale. De l'extérieur, le complexe ressemble à un bâtiment du XIXe siècle avec plusieurs boutiques de différents styles. Une fois à l'intérieur, on est accueilli par un espace ouvert comprenant un bassin, des cafés, des boutiques et plusieurs autres services. La complexité du projet résidait dans la recherche de fluidité fonctionnelle qui devait être assurée au sein de cet ensemble à vocation contemporaine tout en respectant les valeurs architecturales et historiques de son environnement. Le centre est lié au Montréal souterrain ainsi qu'aux stations de métro Square-Victoria-OACI à l'ouest et Place d'Armes à l'est. L'Hôtel Inter-Continental de Montréal est haut de gamme: il a coûté 80 millions. II est composé de deux immeubles qui chevauchent la place, du côté est de l'îlot du Centre de commerce. Sa partie neuve, une tour de 25 étages où se trouvent les 359 chambres, à l'angle des rues Saint-Antoine et Saint-Pierre, a été dessinée par les architectes Arcop, de concert avec Provencher, Roy. La firme Gersovitz, Becker, Moss a été associée à la réfection de la partie ancienne. Les sociétés de décorateurs Alexandra Champalimaud et Marshal Cumming ont contribué au design intérieur de l'ensemble. ... une expression architecturale moderne, étonnante, digne des plus grandes métropoles. - The World Trade Centre Montreal (in French, Centre de Commerce mondial de Montréal) is a shopping centre, office and hotel complex located in the Quartier international district of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Completed in 1992 by Arcop, it is an example of a 'horizontal skyscraper' and a leading example of urban renewal, architectural preservation and rehabilitation. The complex united several smaller Victorian-era commercial buildings (including the city's historic Bank of Nova Scotia building and Canada Steamship Lines building) by encasing them in a larger form, in this case a massive glassed-in atrium running the length of what was once Fortification Lane, itself the site of the city's colonial defensive walls. In a kind of post-modern hommage, a remnant of the Berlin Wall, given to the city in 1992, is on public exhibit within the complex. The complex includes other historic elements, such as a fountain by French architect and sculptor Dieudonné-Barthélemy Guibal (1699–1757) also donated to the city in 1992. At the far end of the centre is the Montreal InterContinental Hotel. From the exterior it appears as a quintessential late-19th century Montreal business block with a diverse collection of buildings in different styles. Once inside the rear sections of those buildings have been oriented on to a vast open space, replete with reflecting pool, cafés, boutiques and other diverse services. The interior is united in its impressive open volume and natural lighting, it reveals itself in layers - for the uninitiated the interior space is often thoroughly unexpected. The centre is connected to Montreal's underground city and to Square-Victoria-OACI metro station towards the West and Place d'Armes and Place Riopelle to the East. (en)
